NBC wins with NFL, but CBS's Sunday afternoon game lifts primetime  

(December 13, 2006) Thanks to the consistent appeal of football, NBC claimed the number one spot for the week, with its pre-game kickoff taking third place.

CBS, however, may have found a way to get a consistent bigger bang for its football bucks by taking advantage of the large black audience that the NFL games attract. Enough African-American households stayed with the network following its Sunday afternoon football match-up that all of its Sunday primetime shows made onto the top 25 chart for the first week of December. This, despite the fact that nearly 2.5 million black homes tuned in NBC’s Sunday night time NFL game.

 The Sunday night coup, however,  made CBS the overall winning network with nine shows of the top 25 list. ABC followed with six programs, NBC placed five, the CW had three and Fox had two.  

The total number of black households watching the top 25, according to Nielsen Media Research, was 30.6 million, a 13 percent decrease from the previous week’s total.
