WWRL, NY's last black-owned radio station, not being sold as rumored

(December 13, 2013) Some radio listeners in New York City thought they had a reason to be upset on Friday the 13th. Rumors were spreading that the city's last black-owned radio station, WWRL 1600 AM, was being sold. Not true, said officials at Access.1 Communications, owners of the progressive talk station.

There are, however, big changes coming to 'RL. The current talk format, which includes popular host Mark Riley, will soon be replaced by Access.1 with Spanish language music programming. The new format is expected to be completed by January 6th.

There will be some reduction in staff, say company officials, but General Manager Adriane Gaines and other station managers will remain in place.

Access.1 Communications currently owns and operates radio stations located throughout various markets including New York, New Jersey, Texas, and Louisiana.  With a variety of programming and content provided by properties like "La Vita" Regional magazine, and Superadio LLC.
