The weather gets colder, and football gets hotter with black TV audiences

(December 6, 2006) It seems the colder it gets, the more folks that are ready for some football. Fox and the NFL racked up big with black households in the final days of November. The Sunday line-up of big match-ups pulled two  million households for post game primetime analysis. NBC’s primetime Sunday night game made the chart’s top ten as well. CBS was able to take advantage of the popularity of the pigskin by again featuring a sports-related report on “60 Minutes.”

The network winner for the week was CBS, which had seven shows in the top 25. It was followed by Fox with six, the CW with five, NBC had four and ABC claimed three.

The total number of black households watching the top 25 shows, according to Nielsen Media Research, was 35.3 million.

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
