Carol Watson,
Tangerine form multicultural recruitment firm for ad industry
(November
27, 2006) Carol Watson (left), former publisher of Vibe magazine, and
president of CW & Partners has joined forces with the executive search
firm Tangerine to establish a new firm that will specialize in recruiting
African-American and Hispanic candidates for the advertising industry.
Tangerine-Watson, Inc. intends to position itself as the largest provider
of the highest caliber multicultural talent in the advertising industry
servicing the agency and marketing business. Tangerine will be a minority
shareholder in Tangerine-Watson, to be owned by Ms. Watson as president.
Two years ago, Janice Nieman, founding partner of the well known executive
search firm Tangerine, took on the task of expanding its roster, in
addition to her mainstream business, to source talent, initially just
African American and later including Hispanic talent. According to Ms.
Nieman, “We received a brief to staff up an African American agency for a
major holding company client in the winter of ’04. It was a wonderful
experience. We met so many smart, energetic and stimulating people. As a
result, we decided to build a portfolio of the best, most passionate
executives that we could introduce to our industry, which claimed it
didn’t know where to find this talent pool.”
From early 2004 till late 2005, Tangerine spent literally hundreds of
hours interviewing candidates, before ‘soft launching’ the new service at
the end of last year. Since then, 21% of Tangerine’s placements have been
African Americans into top-flight agencies with salaries ranging from
$115,000 to $230,000. "Our intention from the beginning was to hand over
this initiative to someone that is better qualified than us. While we knew
we could get this new business unit started, we knew we could not
ultimately deliver with the success that we envisioned. Carol is now the
owner of this new firm”, she continues.
Carol Watson, former Publisher of Vibe, one of the largest urban magazines
said of her new venture. “I was so impressed with the way Tangerine
developed the multicultural initiative. They invested an incredible amount
of time and resources into building their knowledge and top-notch
candidate base. I will now continue to develop the business further,
leveraging my knowledge, experience and connections with Tangerine’s
top-level agency relationships."
Beyond traditional executive search services Tangerine-Watson, will also
be providing agency and marketing clients with other counsel to ensure the
value of diversity in the marketing industry for long-term success.
Tangerine-Watson plans to help identify client business building resources
that can be accessed with the right talent in place.
According to Watson, a 20-year veteran of the media and advertising
industry, "We are frankly the only credible company that can service the
advertising and marketing community with a multicultural talent pool. Our
client partners will be selected to reflect our passion and sincerity for
broadening the agency multicultural talent base. We have to ensure that
our candidates are going to companies that truly realize the value of
diversity.”
Tangerine-Watson is a certified supplier of the NY/NJ Minority Supplier
Development Council.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
