UPN salute to Patti Labelle makes top ten, ‘Girlfriends’ returns to No. 1 (November
17, 2005) Television viewing in black households nationally returned to
normal after a week that saw UPN’s Monday night line-up disappear thanks
to Halloween. “Girlfriends” overtook “Monday Night Football” for the top
spot with an 18 rating and 2.3 million black homes. ABC ran a tight second
with a 17.8 rating from 2.3 million homes. UPN’s “Patti Labelle: A Salute” finished in the eighth spot with a 14.1 rating and 1.8 million homes watching. The Tuesday night program was among the five winners for UPN, but “Everybody Hates Chris” was not among them. CBS placed three shows, and ABC’s “Desperate Housewives" rounded off the list at the tenth position. During the second week of November the overall number of black households watching the top ten shows increased by 17 percent from 17.2 million to 20.2 million. African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
