The Week of Oct. 30 – Nov. 5
Viewers turn to football, basketball in a week without the 'Flavor of Love'

(November 8, 2006) With “Flava of Love” off the schedule, sports was biggest draw on cable for black households during the first week of November. But even ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” which took the No.1 spot on the chart, could not attract the two million-plus households that VH1 pulled in for its reality series.

The NBA was the biggest overall winner for the week. The league's games and pre- and post-game shows had eight entries on the Top 25 chart. There was a four-way tie for winning network, as Disney, ESPN, TNT and USA claimed five shows each in the rankings. BET had three programs listed.

The total number of black households watching the Top 25 cable shows was down 28 percent to 15.4 million, according to Nielsen Media Research. The total for the previous week was 21.4 million.

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
