'Monday Night Football’ returns to No.1, sacking ‘Girlfriends' dominance

(November 2, 2005) After a long absence from the top of the heap, ABC’s Monday Night Football returned to the top of the top ten shows for African-Americans, sacking UPN’s “Girlfriends” four-week run at the top. The fact that two major-market teams (New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons) were facing each other likely played a role in the game’s 16.1 rating. Still, the 2.1 million homes tuning in was short the high of 2.4 million that “Girlfriends” attracted the previous week.

In the battle for Monday night, UPN’s usual lineup captured the second through seventh spots, with Thursday’s “Everybody Hates Chris” in third. ABC failed to place anything but the game on the list, and CBS’ CSI franchise took the ninth and tenth positions. Overall, the number of black households watching the top ten dropped for the first time since the new fall season got underway. The 18.4 million homes tuning in was just less than one percent less than the previous week’s 19.5 million.
