NABOB applauds 4As policy statement on nondiscrimination in advertising
(November 1, 2011) The National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters, Inc. announced its support for the American Association of Advertising Agencies, Inc. policy statement against discrimination in advertising. Noting that eliminating discrimination in advertising is one of the principal reasons for the creation of NABOB, Jim Winston, Executive Director of NABOB said, "We commend the 4As for their leadership in helping to eradicate 'No urban dictates' and 'No Spanish dictates' from the world of advertising," said Winston.
"Advertising avails which exclude potential advertising outlets based upon the race or ethnicity of their listeners and viewers are using incorrect and improper stereotypes." Winston added, "As the most successful advertisers have recognized, African American and Spanish-speaking consumers are a powerful consumer market, and the best way to influence them is through use of minority owned media."
Winston concluded, "We hope that the advertising agencies represented by the 4As will follow its progressive lead and will each adopt and implement nondiscrimination policies that incorporate and expand upon the 4As' model."
NABOB is the only trade association representing the interests of African-American owners of radio and television stations across the country. It has two principal objectives: First, to increase the number of African-American owners of telecommunications facilities, and second, to improve the business climate in which they operate. The overall objective is to maximize the potential for financial success through providing advocacy resources and information in critical business areas including, advertising sales, station acquisition, financing, and federal broadcast regulation.
