Black viewers pick football over baseball; CBS wins week’s network race
(October
23, 2007) In a heavily sports-dominated week, African-American households
favored football over the march to the World Series. The week’s No.1 show
was Fox’s “OT,” football’s most watched post game show. The No.3 show
among black viewers was NBC's "Sunday Night Football," but the third most
popular show in white households was Major League Baseball (The NFL
match-up finished 16th among white viewers).
CBS finished in its usual top spot as the leading network, thanks to nine
shows among the top 25. ABC placed six winners, NBC had four. Fox and the
CW each had three chartmakers.
The total number of black households watching the top 25 shows during the
third week of October, according to Nielsen Media Research, was 30.3
million. Last week’s total was 30.1 million.
the past CBS has scored with black households by featuring profiles on
African-American athletes and entertainers. Its interview last week with
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas about his recently released
autobiography took the news program to No. 1 of the top 25 most popular
shows in black homes.
The CW’s comedy, “The Game,” held on the second place thanks to a strong
lead in from “Girlfriends.” NBC’s “Monday Night Football” posted a third
place finish.
CBS, far and away the winning network for the second week in October,
posted 11 shows on the top 25 chart. ABC followed with five, NBC had four,
The CW three and Fox two.
The total number of black households watching the top 25 shows, according
to Nielsen Media Research, was 30.1 million, or just two percent fewer
than in the previous week.
