Second
discrimination suit filed against Starcom MediaVest
(October 22, 2012)
MediaPost.com is reporting that a discrimination suit was filed with
U.S. District Court in New York in late September by former Starcom
MediaVest planning strategist Angela Cahill. Cahill alleges she had some
of her responsibilities taken away as a top local ad planner on the
Walmart account after she became pregnant. She said she was then fired
when she complained about her diminished role.
SMG has yet to respond to the suit. The complaint comes on the heels of
a racial discrimination suit filed in March of this year by a former SMG
staff member in Detroit. Kristi Goldner said she was passed over for
promotion because of her race. SMG denied any discrimination on the
agency’s part and asked that the suit be dismissed. A pre-trial
conference is scheduled for the end of November.
The need for greater diversity in the advertising industry has been a
persistent topic of discussion. Earlier this year Tangerine Watson Inc,
a consultancy firm specializing in Black, Hispanic and Asian
advertising, marketing and media talent, announced findings from its
Impact Study.
According to the survey, most respondents (89%), regardless of
ethnicity, feel that diversity in the industry needs improvement. And,
in spite of the recent and considerable industry attention to diversity,
the percentage of individuals who feel there is either no change or
change for the worse was high across the board.
