CBS hits
trifecta with NFL, 'CSI' and '60 Minutes;' CW scores with Monday move
(October
18, 2006) For the first time in memory, CBS claimed the top three spots
for the week of the top 25 favorite shows in black households. While the
NFL usually finishes at or near the top with African-Americans, CSI: NY
had an unusual second place finish. “60 Minutes,” which featured an
interview with the one of the black women involved in the Duke University lacrosse
team rape case, captured third position.
The CW’s network’s move of its Sunday night “black block” to primetime
Monday resulted in a boost in ratings for the comedies. In previous weeks,
only “Girlfriends” and “America’s Next Top Model” found their way on the
top 25. The first week of the new schedule placed four of the five
network's favorites on the chart. “Everybody Hates Chris” was still
missing in action.
The network winner for the week was again CBS, which had ten of the 25
positions. It was followed by ABC with six, NBC with five, and CW with
four. The total number of black households watching the top 25 for the
first week of October was 33.7 million, an increase of 1.7 percent over
the previous week.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
