MPA to award grants, fellowships to boost diversity among magazines (October
17, 2005) Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) has created the MPA
Foundation Award Program to increase recruitment and retention of
professionals of color in the magazine industry, it was announced today by
Nina Link, President & CEO, MPA, during her presidential address at the
American Magazine Conference. Grants and fellowships, which will begin to
be awarded in 2006, will be determined by a selection committee comprised
of members of MPA’s Human Resources Advisory Council.“The goals of our diversity efforts are to continue attracting, hiring and retaining the best industry talent,” said Link. “By doing so, magazines will better reflect the multicultural face of American readership.” Two separate types of grants—one for students, another for magazine companies—will be presented by the MPA Foundation. Internship grants will be given to students of color in support of their exploration of magazine journalism and business. The grant will be used to defray the cost of living while a student interns at an MPA-member company. The MPA Foundation will also award grants to domestic MPA-member companies with active internship programs in which at least one-third of the internship pool is ethnically diverse. Funding will go towards the cost of training and developing their interns who participate in MPA’s Magazine University Summer Internship Development Program. Fellowships for mid-career professionals of color in the magazine industry will also be available, enabling them to attend selected magazine publishing courses held at Stanford University, and other qualifying institutions. The Foundation will pay the full amount of tuition and lodging for the participant for the duration of the program they attend (Professional Publishing, Publishing on the Web or Strategic Planning for Publishing Executives). The fellowships are designed for those working in the business side of the industry to further their education on all facets of magazine management.
