Memorial for
pioneering broadcasting exec, Gene A. Davis set for Oct. 27
(October
15, 2007) A memorial benefit
will be held Oct. 27 for Gene A. Davis, a pioneering African-American
broadcasting executive. Davis died of pancreatic cancer Aug. 28 in New
York at the age of 68.
Davis’ career began in sales promotion, and one of his most enduring
contributions was creating the all news radio slogan, “You give us 22
minutes, we’ll give you the world.” He received more than two dozen awards
for work developed during stints with Group W and the Post-Newsweek
stations.
He moved into television and was responsible for producing and directing
ground-breaking programs, including the weekly Essence television show for
the black women's magazine, and the public affairs program, America’s
Black Forum.
Davis created a host of documentaries, including projects for the
international broadcast market, including "You Gotta Pay The Band, The
Words, The Music, The Life of Abbey Lincoln," "Shirley Horn Sings and
Plays: Here's To Life." and "From New York To Paris, Starring Queen Esther
Marrow and The Harlem Gospel Singers."
He was responsible for programs highlighting artists Ella Fitzgerald and
Dizzy Gillespie for the A&E channel’s “Biography.” Davis earned production
credits for such programs as "Walk a Mile in My Shoes, The Ninety Year
History of The NAACP," "The Powerful History Of Black Humor" and "AIDS AT
21, The Specter Of An Epidemic."
As an independent producer, Davis created a series of documentaries
including "African American Men," "The African American Family" and
"African American Women" and the recent "Images & Realities, African
American Children."
A memorial benefit for Mr. Davis has been scheduled for Oct. 27 in New
York City and will help provide a scholarship at the Harlem School of the
Arts. For more information, contact Debbie Taylor at (201) 541-0666 or via
