Top African American marketing, media executives to receive 2013 MAAX Awards

(October 15, 2013) Target Market News today announced the recipients of the 2013 Marketing to African Americans with Excellence [MAAX] Awards. The annual awards presentation recognizes the contributions, innovations and exceptional performance of African American professionals in the fields of marketing, advertising, media, public relations and consumer research.

"With the African-American consumer market representing more than one trillion dollars annually in economic impact, these seven honorees are among the most important in creating success for Corporate America," said Ken Smikle, president of Target Market News. "Their expertise place them in the vanguard of those who are shaping business practices and creating opportunities for both companies and consumers. We invite the entire industry to join us as we celebrate their unique accomplishments."

The honorees were selected from recommendations made by editors and contributors of Target Market News, and from previous MAAX Award winners. Candidates were considered for recognition on the basis of being African American executives with distinctive careers, and who, throughout the course of their professional careers, have endeavored to promote greater growth and understanding of the African American consumer market.

The 2013 MAAX Award recipients are:

- Advertising Executive of the Year - Deborah Gray-Young, Vice President - Media Director, Burrell Communications

- Media Executive of the Year - Len Burnett, CEO, Group Publisher, Uptown Media

- Public Relations Executive of the Year - Robin Beaman, President, Beaman Incorporated

- Research Executive of the Year - Carol Cunningham, Vice President - Consumer Insights, BET Networks

- Lifetime Achievement Award - Linda Jefferson, Senior Vice President - Media Services, Burrell Communications

- Lifetime Achievement Award - Barry Cooper, Digital Strategist and Founder of

The honorees for the Eighth Annual MAAX Awards will be celebrated on Friday, November 22, at an awards luncheon during the 14th Annual MAAX Summit. The event, hosted by Target Market News in Chicago at the Hyatt Magnificent Mile Hotel, is the industry's largest yearly gathering of African American marketing, media and research professionals.

New research presentations will be made by AARP, Dove Marketing, Harley-Davidson Motor Co., IHS Polk, McDonald's, Nielsen, The Futures Group, the U.S. Census Bureau, Wells Fargo and others.

The MAAX Summit presents the latest strategies, trends and findings in black consumer advertising, marketing and research  with presentations and panel discussions from the leading companies and professionals in the industry.
