Arbitron, Radio
One reach five-year agreement on PPM radio rating service (October
15, 2007) Arbitron Inc. today announced that Radio One, Inc. the largest
radio broadcasting company that primarily targets African-American and
urban listeners, has signed a five-year contract for radio ratings
services in 16 markets. The agreement includes Portable People Meter
ratings services in 15 top-fifty markets and a continuation of the
diary-based ratings services in one market.
The PPM agreement covers 15 Radio One markets encompassed in Arbitron’s
previously announced PPM rollout plan: Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland,
Cincinnati, Charlotte, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis,
Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Raleigh, St. Louis and Washington D.C.
Alfred C. Liggins, III, chief executive office and president, Radio One
stated: “Electronic measurement is providing compelling evidence about the
power of Urban radio to reach and engage the African American consumer. It
is also demonstrating the ‘working persons’ advantage that Urban radio
offers marketers who want to reach the brand conscious and brand loyal
African-American consumer.”
“I commend Arbitron for its willingness to address the concerns expressed
by urban broadcasters. I look forward to helping guide the process of
enhancing the sampling of African-Americans in the PPM service in order
improve the utility of the PPM ratings for all broadcasters.”
Over the next three years, Arbitron is scheduled to deploy the Portable
People Meter ratings service in the top 50 markets in place of the paper
diary method that the company has used to collect radio audience estimates
since 1965.
