The Week of October 2 – 8
Eagles vs. Cowboys rivalry puts NFL on FOX at top of the week and the records

(October 11, 2006) The much hyped and anticipated NFL game featuring now Dallas Cowboy Terrell Owens facing his former Philadelphia Eagles teammates lived up to the billing – at least ratings-wise. The match-up was the highest rated NFL game for Fox since it started broadcasting the league in 1994.

Philly came from behind to win, and because it ran past 7 pm (ET) the game itself and not just the post-game show became eligible for primetime ratings. Time also caused it to bump heads with the Fox baseball game that followed.

The rest of the chart for the top 25 most popular shows in black households had the usual lineup. ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Dancing With the Stars" were second and third respectively, followed by NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.”

The overall network winner for the first week of October was CBS with eight shows, closely followed by NBC with seven and ABC with six. The CW placed three of the five shows from its Sunday night “black block.” “America’s Next Top Model” came within 50,000 homes of beating NBC’s NFL game in the Sunday primetime contest.

The total number of black households watching the top 25, according to Nielsen Media Research was 32.7 million, a drop of just one percent against the previous week.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
