The 2014 MAAX Awards to honor African American marketing, media, research execs

(October 8, 2014) Target Market News has announced the recipients of the 2014 Marketing to African Americans with Excellence (MAAX) Awards. The annual awards presentation recognizes the contributions, innovations and exceptional performance of African American professionals in the fields of marketing, advertising, media, public relations and consumer research.

A new category, the President's Award for Advocacy, has been added this year to recognize those who have been engaged for many years in creating economic opportunities and changing public policy in the African American marketing and media arenas.

"These honorees represent the best among those professionals in marketing, media and research who build bridges between Black consumers and Corporate America," said Ken Smikle, President of Target Market News. "We invite the entire industry to join us as we celebrate their unique accomplishments."

The honorees were selected from recommendations made by previous MAAX Award winners, and from the editors and contributors of Target Market News. Candidates were considered for recognition on the basis of being African American executives with distinctive careers, and who, throughout the course of their professional careers, have promoted greater growth and understanding of the African American consumer market.

The 2014 MAAX Award recipients are:

- Advertising Executive of the Year - Vida Cornelious, Executive Vice President, Chief Creative Officer, GlobalHue

- Marketing Executive of the Year - James H. Colon, Vice President, African American Business Strategy, Toyota Motor
  Sales, USA

- Media Executive of the Year - Pluria Marshall, Jr., President & CEO, Equal Access Media Inc.

- Public Relations Executive of the Year - Sheila Eldridge, President & CEO, Miles Ahead Entertainment

- Research Executive of the Year - Aiesha Powell, Research Manager, Johnson Publishing Co.

- Lifetime Achievement Award - Melody Spann Cooper, Chairman & President, Midway Broadcasting - WVON

- Lifetime Achievement Award - Verdia Johnson, President, Footsteps LLC

- President's Award for Advocacy - Glenda Gill, Executive Director, Rainbow PUSH Automotive Project

- President's Award for Advocacy - Sanford Moore, former agency executive and black talk radio host

The honorees for the Ninth Annual MAAX Awards will be celebrated on Monday, November 17, at an awards luncheon during the 15th Annual MAAX Summit. The event, hosted by Target Market News in Chicago at the Museum of Broadcast Communications, is the industry's largest yearly gathering of African American marketing, media and research professionals.

The MAAX Summit presents the latest strategies, trends and data in black consumer advertising, marketing and research.
