THE LATEST NEWS
Singer, producer Wyclef Jean signs with HBO for comedy series

By Tanya Kersey
BlackTalentNews.com
(October 6, 2005) Fugees frontman Wyclef Jean has inked a deal for an HBO comedy series. Jean will produce and star in the yet untitled series which is loosely based on his life. Seth Rosenfeld and Danny Hoch are on board to pen the pilot script with Jean while Stu Smiley will serve as an executive producer. Jean will also write and produce original music for the series through his Platinum Sound studio.

Jean has branched out into acting in recent years. He appeared in four episodes of the NBC drama "Third Watch" this year. He also has roles in the indendent films, "One Last Thing," and "Dirty." “Dirty” is set to debut at next month's AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival.

The Haitian-born hip-hop and world music artist Jean moved to Brooklyn with his family when he was 9, then later to Northern New Jersey. In 1987 he joined forces with Lauryn Hill and Pras Michael to form the Fugees. The Fugees became international stars with the release of their sophomore album, The Score, which sold over 17 million copies worldwide. "The Score" was the biggest selling hip-hop album of all time back when it was released. The group then disbanded as the trio cultivated their solo careers.

Jean’s first solo album, Wyclef Jean Presents the Carnival Featuring the Refugee All-Stars was a major hit and spawned two hits -- "We Trying to Stay Alive" (adapted from The Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive") and "Gone Til November" (recorded with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra).

Jean went on to work with artists including Santana, Tevin Campbell, Cypress Hill, Bounty Killer, Whitney Houston, Destiny's Child, Sublime, Simply Red, Mya, Sinéad O'Connor, Kimberly Scott, Mick Jagger, Canibus, The Black Eyed Peas and Eric Benét.

Jean also produced and wrote original songs for the original soundtrack to the 2003 Documentary "The Agronomist", a film about the legendary Jean Dominique, an active man of the people of Wyclef's homeland, Haiti. In 2005, Jean earned a Golden Globe nomination for his track entitled "Million Voices" featured on the soundtrack to the film Hotel Rwanda.

Jean has also appeared in commercials and prints in recent years as an endorser for Pepsi.
