Radio One kicks off year-long celebration of its 25th anniversary

(October 3, 2005) Radio One Inc. has 13 million weekly listeners tuned to 70 stations in 22 markets from coast to coast and it all began with the acquisition of a single station. On October 3rd, 1980, Catherine L. Hughes (left) launched her first radio station, WOL-AM, in Washington, DC, making history as the nation's first 24-hour Black talk format.

Twenty-five years later, to the day, Radio One Inc. will launch a year long celebration of its 25 years of service to the community on Monday, October 3rd, at 7 PM, with a star studded, invitation only gala at Windows restaurant in downtown Los Angeles hosted by Catherine L. Hughes, Founder, Chairperson of the Board and Secretary and Alfred C. Liggins, III, President and CEO.

The initial celebration of this authentic American success story will commence tonight high above downtown Los Angeles. A dazzling array of celebrities and executives from music, film, television and radio will be on hand to join in this gala celebration of 25 years of service by Radio One Inc. Windows restaurant is located on the 32nd floor of 1150 South Olive Street.

"On October 3, 1980, God Blessed and empowered Radio One, Inc. with a mission to serve the radio listening community.  For 25 years we have been grateful for that opportunity and committed to providing the very best community service and radio programming possible.  In most of our 22 radio markets, we are the most popular station in the city so this year long celebration gives us the opportunity to express our gratitude to our 13.8 million listeners who make our success possible.  Our loyal and dedicated listeners and sponsors are our most important assest," states Cathy Hughes.

Although Radio One's year long celebration kicks off in Los Angeles with the gala as well as a host of on-air promotions and special events, nationally as well as in its local radio markets, the year long celebration will reach its climax with a star studded gala celebration at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC during August 2006, bringing the final celebration back to where it all began. This historic musical event will feature live performances and appearances by some of today's biggest stars. The event will be telecast later on TV One, the lifestyle and entertainment television network for African-American adults that Radio One launched with Comcast Corporation last year.
