Black Cable TV Ratings for Week of Sept. 3 - 9
'Love and Hip Hop' finale sets record; DNC on cable tops 17 million black viewers (September
13, 2012) VH1's "Love and Hip Hop Atlanta" ended its first season with a
record-setting total audience of 4.4 million, 3.8 million of which were
Black fans. That's more than any episode of "Real Housewives." The
reality show was perfectly placed on the Monday night before the start
of the Democratic Convention, coupled in a four-hour block with the
premiere of "T.I. and Tiny." After Monday, the DNC took over cable prime
time in Black households.Over the three nights of the DNC, Black viewers stayed glued to the proceedings. Tuesday, which featured First Lady Michelle Obama's speech, attracted 6.3 million viewers across five hours. Two nights later, President Obama barely edged out his wife with a total of 6.5 million tuning in for five hours. MSNBC proved slightly more popular than CNN across the three nights, but it is not known how many watched on commercial-free C-SPAN. While the DNC was the most watched cable event of the week (17.9 million viewers over 15 total hours of coverage), VH1 was again the most viewed cable network, claiming 12.7 million viewers for four of it shows. MSNBC was second with 9.3 million for 8 hours of DNC coverage, while CNN took third for 8.6 million over seven hours. The total number of viewers for the Top 25 cable shows of the week, according to Nielsen, was 36.7 million, a 25 percent jump over the previous week.
