America Online names Nick Charles Editor In Chief of AOL Black Voices

(Sept. 12, 2005) America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive services company, today named Nicholas Charles Editor In Chief of AOL Black Voices.  In this new role, Charles will be responsible for spearheading the day-to-day editorial activities across all content areas including News, Sports, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Finance, Education and Community.  He will report into the newly named Vice President and General Manager, Janet Rollé.

“We are excited to have Nicholas join AOL Black Voices and are confident that through his far-reaching editorial experience - having covered news, culture, lifestyle, business, sports, politics and entertainment for diverse publications - he will significantly contribute to the growth of the AOL Black Voices brand,” said Janet Rollé, Vice President and General Manager, AOL Black Voices. 

Most recently, Charles was the Founding Editor In Chief of the Toyota & Jungle Media Group culture/lifestyle magazine, Forward, responsible for the conceptualization and design of the 60-page title.  Before that, he was a Staff Writer for the New York Daily News writing feature articles and cultural criticism, plus a weekly column on pop culture. In addition, he served as a human interest and features writer for People magazine.

Additionally, Charles has written and edited for various publications including Los Angeles Times, The Nation, George, The Village Voice, Ladies’ Home Journal, POZ, TV Guide, Black Enterprise, New York Times, Essence, Emerge, Savoy, Interview, Biography, Independent Film & Video Monthly and the New York Sun.

Charles holds a B.A. in Journalism from
New York University.  In addition, he possesses widespread teaching experience, ranging from lectures on international-reporting techniques at the Association of Media and Professional Journalists in Education conference to teaching magazine writing at the Frederick Douglass Community Arts Center in New York.

'Buying Power' report reveals surge by black households for consumer electronics

Despite tighter economic times, African-American households are significantly increasing their expenditures on consumer electronics for the home, according to the newest edition of The Buying Power of Black America report. In many categories such as video games, televisions, CD players, cable TV service and sound equipment, black households are spending more on average than their white counterparts.

According to the 103-page report, black households had $656 billion in earned income in 2003, an increase of 3.9% over the $631 earned in 2002.
