'Barrino Story'
encore tops cable list, Spike’s Katrina special hits top 10
(August
31, 2006) An encore presentation of Lifetime’s original movie, “The
Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not A Fairy Tale,” proved to be a winner
again for the cable channel. While it attracted about half the audience of
its debut, the original movie captured No. 1 for top 25 cable programs for
the final week of August.
Spike Lee’s HBO documentary, “When The Levee Broke,” garnered enough
word-of-mouth that the second day airing attracted more black viewers than
the first. The ninth and eleventh place finishes for the special had a
combined audience of more than 1.5 million black homes.
With summer winding down, and more children in charge of the remote, the
Disney channel snatched up 12 of the positions on the top 25 to easily be
the week’s network winner. The total number of black households watching
the top 25, according to Nielsen Media Research, was 18.2 million, a drop
of five percent against the previous week’s total.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
