Black TV Ratings for Week of August 19 - 25
Black viewers slow to return to network TV shows, as defection to cable continues

(August 21, 2013) It is still summer and most black TV viewers are more focused on relaxing than their weekly routines. The TV networks will be anxiously watching for the usual end of summer growth spurt following the Labor Day holiday, but there may be reason for concern. Black TV viewers now play a pivotal part in the ratings success of network shows, representing 9 to 10 percent of a Top 25 program's total audience. That's large enough to determine which show wins the time slot, especially when cable shows are adding to the erosion.

CBS was the most watched network in black homes during the fourth week in August. It posted 8.5 million black viewers across 11 shows. NBC took a distant second place with 4.3 million watching five shows. ABC had 3.3 million for five Top 25 shows.

The total number of viewers for the Top 25 shows in black households, according to Nielsen, was 18.8 million, or three percent more than the previous week.
