BET signs animation deal
with Film Roman, studio behind 'The Simpsons'
By
Christian Lewis
Multichannel News
(August 16, 2006) BET’s new animation division announced a deal with
Film Roman to produce animated films, series and multiplatform content for
Internet, broadband and mobile applications.
Film Roman, an IDT Entertainment company, is the animation studio behind
The Simpsons, King of the Hill, X-Men: Evolution and Sci-Fi Channel's 3-D
series, Tripping the Rift. The studio has also produced feature films,
direct-to-DVDs, commercials and music videos.
The three-year, nonexclusive deal between the two companies also includes
an agreement to develop and produce direct-to-DVD and theatrical releases,
as well as the right to distribute internationally outside of BET.
"There will be shorts that will air throughout our programming schedule,
as well as online content,” BET president of entertainment Reginald Hudlin
said. “Hopefully, by fall of next year, we'll begin to launch our animated
series."
BET also announced plans to develop a new original adult action-adventure
animated series. Creating the series will be BET senior vice president of
animation Denys Cowan and former Milestone Media cofounder Dwayne
McDuffie. McDuffie co-created the series Static Shock and is a producer
and story editor on Cartoon Network’s Justice League.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
