The Week
of July 31 – Aug. 6
NBC, black
households prove they're ready for football – on Sundays nights
(August
9, 2006) A preseason Hall of Fame game between the Philadelphia Eagles and
Oakland Raiders kicked off NBC forthcoming Sunday Night Football broadcast
with a huge ratings victory. Of the 9.8 million viewers that Nielsen Media
Research says watched the Raiders win, more than 10 percent of the
audience was black households, making the game number one on this week’s
top 25 shows.
This sets up a pending rivalry between NBC and the new CW network, which
plans to air a block of black-oriented shows on Sunday nights. “Grey’s
Anatomy,” the only Sunday program this season that was regularly a
favorite with black households, is moving to Thursday in the fall.
Fox led the pack of winners by network with seven of the top 25 shows. The
competition: CBS and UPN had five each, ABC and NBC both posted four
shows. The total number of black households watching the top 10 shows was
10.7 million. The total for the top 25 was 22.7 million, a virtual tie
with the previous week’s total.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
