Black TV Ratings for Week of July 30 - Aug. 5
Summer Olympics draw a million more Black viewers than 2008 games
(August
7, 2012) NBC's decision to tape delay many of the most anticipated
Olympic events until prime time caused a firestorm among fans. One
consequence was that while 2 billion people around the world watched
Jamaica's Usain Bolt take gold in the men's 100m finals, none of them
were in the U.S. News of the runner's victory, however, was an
inescapable viral headline that spoiled the results for Americans.
Black viewers showed even more enthusiasm for the 2012 games, with an
average of one million more watching every night than tuned in 2008.
Gabby Douglas, the first African American to win a gold medal in
gymnastics, was a leading factor in the growth in popularity. Black
viewers were at least eight percent of NBC audience each night.
The games' seven nightly broadcasts on NBC attracted a total of 20.9
Black viewers, easily the most viewed TV network for the week. CBS had
5.9 million viewers across ten shows, ABC claimed 2.5 million viewers
for five shows, and Fox notched 1.7 million for three shows.
The total viewership for the Top 25, according to Nielsen, was up 3.5
percent to 31.2 million.
