The Week
of July 24 – 30
Fox’s 'Think
You Can Dance' No.1 on new list of top 25 primetime shows
(August
2, 2006) Beginning this week, Target Market News is expanding its weekly
list of favorite over-the-air shows with black households from 10 to 25.
Thanks to arrangements with Nielsen Media Research, our readers will now
get a deeper understanding of the primetime viewing habits of
African-Americans and how the networks are doing in competing for their
loyalty.
The new list will also give us the ability to measure performance against
the top 25 offerings on cable. For the sake of comparison, we’ll continue
to tally the total number of households for the top ten shows, as well as
the top 25.
”So You Think You Can Dance” returned to the top of the list with its
Wednesday broadcast. The breakdown of the top 25 shows by network was CBS
– 7, Fox – 6, UPN – 5, NBC – 4, and ABC – 3. Despite most major markets
experiencing a heat wave, the total number of homes watching the top 10
dropped during the fourth week of July to 10.7 million from 12.3 million
the previous week. The total watching the top 25 was 22.8 million.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
