St.
Louis American again voted nation's best African-American newspaper
(July 28, 2012) The St. Louis American was again named the top African-American newspaper in the country by the National Newspaper Publishers' Association. This marks the eighth time that the St. Louis American has won the prestigious John B. Russwurm Award, honoring the best of the best African-American newspapers in the U.S. The award was the finale of the NNPA's special annual Merit Awards Gala, which was held recently in Atlanta. "I couldn't be more proud of and thankful to our dedicated, hard-working team at the American," said Donald M. Suggs, publisher of the St. Louis American, now the largest weekly newspaper in the entire state of Missouri. "We have a business model focused on ‘value'…providing value for both our readers and our advertisers. We deeply appreciate this award and look to continue to be increasingly more in touch with our readers in print, online, through social networking, and within the community." At the awards ceremony, the American's website, stlamerican.com, received the first place A. Philip Randolph MillerCoors Messenger Award for Best Newspaper Website. Other NNPA awards the American received included several first place awards: General Excellence, Best Layout and Design, Best Lifestyle Section, Best Special Edition (Diversity, A Business Imperative), Best News Pictures, Best Use of Photographs, and Best Sports Section. With a circulation of 66,000 papers distributed every Thursday, The St. Louis American is now the single largest weekly newspaper in the entire state of Missouri (making Missouri the only state where the largest weekly is a targeted, ethnic publication).
