Three new members
named to Census African American Advisory Committee
(July 23, 2007) The Secretary of Commerce has announced the appointment of
three new members to on the U.S. Census Bureau's Advisory Committee on the
African-American population. As a member of the nine-person committee the
member advise the Census Bureau on the new American Community Survey and
ways to achieve a more accurate count of the African-American population
in the 2010 Census.
The newly named members are
- Linda G. Marc (White Plains, NY), fellow of epidemiology in psychiatry
and co-investigator in the HIV Clinical Trials Unit at Cornell University
- Dorsey C. Miller (Parkland, FL), president and CEO of DC Miller and
Associates
- Karl D. Gregory (Southfield, MI), a retired Oakland (Mich.) University
distinguished professor
Linda Marc has conducted research and is published in the areas of
HIV/AIDS and minority health issues. Marc received a master's degree from
the Yale School of Public Health, where she is a lecturer in Public Health
Practice. She received her master's in pharmacoepidemiology and doctorate
in social epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. Her
research and knowledge of the Haitian community will enhance the
committee's understanding of diverse ethnic populations within the
African-American community.
Dorsey Miller has more than 40 years of community service and civic
outreach nationally and in the state of Florida. Miller is a member and
past president of the Kiwanis Club of Central Broward County, and has
served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the American
Cancer Society, Broward Community College and the Greater Fort Lauderdale
Chamber of Commerce. Miller served as 35th Grand Basileus (national
president) of Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He also is a former executive
director of Diversity and Equal Educational Opportunity for Broward
County.
Karl Gregory retired in 1996 as a distinguished professor emeritus in the
School of Business Administration at Oakland University. Gregory also has
served as a member of the Advisory Committee on Trade Negotiations under
both Presidents Carter and Reagan. He also served on the board of
directors of several financial institutions, including the Detroit Branch
of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
Five race and ethnic advisory committees --- African-American, American
Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian and Other
Pacific Islander --- advise the Census Bureau on issues affecting minority
populations. The committees are assembled from the public at large and
representatives of national, state, local and tribal entities, as well as
nonprofit and private sector organizations. Members of the committees are
academicians, community leaders, policy makers and others interested in an
accurate count for their communities.
