Following
exit of Radio One’s COO, Barry Mayo to serve as consultant
(July
10, 2006) Barry Mayo, through his 11-year-old Mayo Media consulting firm,
has been hired by Radio One to serve as a consultant on the programming
and operations of the company’s 71 mostly urban-formatted stations.
Mayo recently decided not to re-new his contract with Emmis NY where he
served as senior vice president and general manager of the company’s New
York stations group. Emmis has extended its relationship with Mayo by
hiring him as a consultant. Mayo will be based in the New York area.
The assignment comes following the departure of Mary Catherine Sneed, COO
of Radio One since January 1998. She has said that she will establish her
own consulting practice with a concentration on urban and Hispanic
stations. Alfred Liggins, president and CEO, will assume her
responsibilities until a replacement is named.
This is the latest in series of executives changes that have taken place
at Radio One. A year and half ago, Radio One hired Zemira Jones as vice
president of operations and he has introduced a new national black talk
network as part of the company's offerings.
Radio One is facing challenges to its long track record of continuous
growth. Its Los Angeles stations, KKBT-FM, has experienced a significant
drop in ratings over its performance in the previous year. It is expected
that Tom Joyner’s morning show, which is owned by Radio One, will be added
to boost audience.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
