Vibe magazine is sold to Black Book owner, Len Burnett to remain publisher

(July 3, 2006) Vibe magazine, the urban music and lifestyle magazine, has been sold by Vibe/Spin Ventures to Keith Glen Media, the company behind Black Book, a fashion and culture bi-monthly targeted to the general market. An official announcement on the acquisition is expected on Wednesday, July 5th.

According to sources close to the transaction, Len Burnett, vice president and group publisher will remain in that post. Burnett, who was among the original founders of Vibe, returned to the magazine just a year ago.

Kenard Gibbs, president of the magazine, will be leaving his position. He first joined Vibe as Midwest Sales Director in 1993 and returned as president in June 2000.

[In a separate announcement made on June 30th, Sub-Urban Brands, Inc. a multi-brand apparel company, appointed Gibbs to the company’s Board of Directors.

"American urban culture dictates fashion for the youth market around the world," says Gibbs in the statement. "I look forward to contributing to Sub-Urban's phenomenal success in the urban arena, and believe that there is no ceiling to the Company's ability to capitalize on that lucrative market."]

A number of editorial jobs are expected to be affected with the change in ownership. Among them, Mimi Valdés, Vibe editor-in-chief, is being replaced with the magazine’s former editorial head, Danielle Smith. Valdés was appointed managing editor in 1998 and then editor-in-chief of Blaze magazine. In 2000, Valdés was named executive editor of Vibe, and then editor-at-large.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
