The Week of June 12 – 18
'Basketball Jones' overtakes primetime television during NBA finals

(June 21, 2006) The Miami Heat-Dallas Mavericks match-up for the NBA Finals proved to be one of the leagues' most watched series in years. In black households, basketball captured half of the top ten most popular show for the third week of June, with game five attracting more than 3 million homes and 4.5 million black viewers.

The only other winning shows were on nights which had no games. UPN had three shows on the list, all on Monday night. Fox and CBS also found winners that didn’t go head-to-head with the Finals. The total overall number of homes watching the top ten was 17.2 million, a 14.5 percent increase over the previous week’s total.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
