SM, a national magazine for single mothers, being launched in the fall

(June 16, 2006) SM: The Magazine for Single Mothers is being introduced by Mystic Publications, Inc. in the fall of this year. The first national bi-monthly consumer magazine for single mothers, SM will have an independent editorial spirit, and will address the distinctive legal, family and financial concerns of the 1.2 million single mothers in the nation.

“We will provide cutting age and well researched articles presented in an intelligent and courageous manner,” said SM publisher, Crystal H. Jennings. “SM is not another parenting magazine; we are fierce supporters of the rights of the reader as a woman first, with many roles, one being a single mother. SM will speak to her as a multidimensional woman.”

Each issue of SM will bring its readers relevant and timely advice on finances, family law, and how to balance work and family life by well-known writers. SM will highlight a father’s perspective on co-parenting with a single mother. SM will showcase today’s fashion trends, making SM the quintessential arbiter of good taste in ready-to-wear. For those who are health enthusiasts and seek advice on preventive disease advice, stress prevention and fitness, SM will offer an authoritative, lively, and informative department. SM will appeal to single mothers with an above average desire to be informed on what is best for herself and her family.

Jennings, 37, a former model and single mother of a son, Noah, 6 years old, began a career in journalism as a self-help columnist at a New Jersey newsmagazine and ventured on to work in the editorial department of The New York Daily News. She has also worked in the fashion and beauty sector, as a professional editorial, commercial and showroom model in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

After a four year marriage ended in divorce, Crystal discovered that there was not enough easily accessible information available that could help her address her unique legal, financial and emotional situation. “With SM Magazine, I plan to provide single mothers with the tools that will help them to manage their lives.”

Also a motivational speaker, Jennings has addressed thousands of single, married and young women spreading her inspirational message of overcoming tragedy. Having survived the death of both parents by the time she was 17 years old, as well as a gamut of life experiences, she obtained her formal education in communications and is a board certified Graphic Designer.

“Our mission,” says Jennings, “is to expose single mothers to information, products and services that draw from modern practices and philosophical inspiration that will help them to successfully manage their lives, mind, body and spirit. SM will explore the reality of holistic family ideals and conscious single parenting. This informative, intelligent magazine represents the exceptional single mothers of the new millennium.”

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
