NBA Conference Finals continue playoffs' dominance over black cable viewing

(June 7, 2006) Basketball loyalists continued to grow in number as more black households tune in to the NBA deciding games for the eastern and western conference championships. The match-ups between Miami vs. Detroit and Dallas vs. Phoenix were the only cable programs to claim at least one million households during the first week of June.

While ESPN and TNT together claimed ten sport-related winners among the top 25 cable shows, other patterns emerged in black household viewing. BET had four winners, including the only new original programming with reality shows, “College Hill” and “Season of the Tiger.” Adult Swim’s “Futurama” returned to the list after a week’s absence.

The total number of black households watching the top 25 cable shows, according to Nielsen Media Research, was 20.3 million, an increase of four percent over the previous week.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
