Oprah leaves daytime airwaves with the largest audience in show's history

(May 27, 2011) "The Oprah Winfrey Show" finale last Wednesday, not surprisingly, pulled in the largest audience in its 25-year history. Nielsen determined that 13.3 percent of all homes in 56 of its overnight metered markets were watching Winfrey's farewell.

It will take a while to calculate the actual number of viewers that watched the last installment, since the program is syndicated and airs at different times across all markets. The preliminary numbers do not reflect the St. Louis market where the show was preempted in order to air coverage of the tornado's impact. The last episode was re-scheduled for the following day.

The largest audience prior to the finale recorded a 13.4 household rating. For the last year, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" posted an average daily audience of about seven million viewers.

Repeat broadcasts of the program continue to air in most TV markets.
