'American Idol' wraps up season in first place; CBS is again week’s top
network
(May
30, 2007) The grand finale of Fox’s “American Idol,” while huge by
primetime viewing standards, didn’t attract a mega audience among black
households. Even though the winner, Jordin Sparks, is African-American,
the talent show didn’t rise above the ratings heights of previous seasons.
The final Wednesday show attracted 2.7 million black households, and the
Tuesday edition drew 1.9 million.
ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” also in finale mode, had its best showing
of the season by taking third and fourth place among the top 25 shows for
black households.
The winning network for the seventh consecutive week was CBS, which had
nine programs on the chart, the highest rated being “CSI: NY” in sixth
position. NBC followed with five shows, while both ABC and Fox posted four
winners.
According to Nielsen Media Research, the total number of black households
watching the top 25 during the last week of May sweeps month was 29.1
million, or 12 percent fewer than the previous week’s total.
