Ross Love sells
Cincinnati urban talk station WDBZ-AM to Radio One
By Cliff Peale
Cincinnati Enquirer (May 21, 2007) Local businessman Ross Love has quietly sold urban talk
radio station WDBZ-AM 1230 to industry giant Radio One Inc.
The sale closed in March, Radio One spokesman Scott Royster confirmed in
an e-mail message. He would not provide a selling price.
Radio One has been operating WDBZ, the all-talk station known as “The
Buzz,” under a local marketing agreement. It also owns and operates WIZF-FM
(101.1). And last year, it bought the rights to WMOJ-FM and moved it to
100.3 on the FM dial.
Love could not be reached for comment this morning.
Royster said Love remains on the Radio One board of directors, and that
Radio One does not have plans for further expansions in this market.
It’s not clear whether the sale of “The Buzz” has had any impact on its
daily operations, even though the station has become a potent force in the
local African-American community.
Love started Blue Chip Enterprises in 1995 when he led a group of
investors that bought WIZF for $4 million.
After amassing more than a dozen stations, he sold the company to Radio
One in 2001 for $190 million in cash and stock.
But he kept WDBZ then, saying it provided a valuable community service.
Radio One took over commercial operations, giving it scale advantages in
advertising and promotions.
Love still retains interests in several other local companies.
