The Week of May 1 - 7
NBA’s slam dunk on black household cable viewing of playoffs rolls on

(May 11, 2006) As the second round of the NBA playoffs get underway, the games grow in popularity with black viewers. The top four games each had more than one million households viewing, according to Nielsen Media Research.

While there were fewer games each round for fans to flock to, the average number of black households watching each game increased by 22 percent over last week’s viewing. The total black audience watching all NBA eight games on cable was 7.9 million households. That’s 44 percent of the entire top 25 list.

TV Land also had a good week with black cable viewers. It’s “Good Times” retro fest took six spots on the top 25. That was good for second place behind TNT’s eight for overall number of shows. BET had four winners on the list. The total number of black households watching the top 25 cable shows during the first week of May was 18.07 million, a fiver percent increase over the previous week.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
