Black Cable TV Ratings for Week of April 25 - May 1
Black viewing for the NBA playoff slightly off for the same period last year

(May 9, 2011) Black households are solidly following the NBA Playoffs as dedicatedly as ever. Total black viewership was down to 19 million over 12 shows, versus 20.3 million for nine related shows during the same week in 2010. But black audience are giving the games their ratings success. Black viewers were practically half the total audience of 5.8 million for the most watched game of the week, the Lakers vs. the Hornets.

TNT, the week's most watched cable net, saw its popularity soar with NBA coverage to 17.4 million over 11 game-related shows. USA scored a distant second with 3.5 million for four shows. BET took third with 2.8 million for three shows.

According to Nielsen data, the total number of black viewers for the Top 25 cable shows of the last week of April was down 12.2 percent from the previous week to 32.5 million.

New "Buying Power" report: Black consumers spend as economy grows
Details $507 billion in expenditures

African-American consumers are cautiously increasing their spending in some key product categories, even as they continue to make adjustments in a slowly growing economy. The finding comes from the 16th annual edition of "The Buying Power of Black America" report published by Target Market News..

In 2009, black households spent an estimated $507 billion in 27 product and services categories. That's an increase of 16.6% over the $435 billion spent in 2008. African-Americans" total earned income for 2009 is estimated at $836 billion...
