New owners of NY's WBLS-FM buy the intellectual property of rival KISS-FM

(April 26, 2012) Emmis Communications today announced it entered into a transaction to sell the intellectual property rights of Kiss FM to YMF Media, which is in the process of acquiring New York radio stations WBLS-FM and WLIB-AM. This means that after 30 years of battling one another for loyalty of mostly Black and Hispanic listeners, the urban radio war is over. WBLS will now become the sole urban station in the nation's No.1 media market.

As of today, Kiss and WBLS began simulcasting one signal which includes a tribute to the 30-year legacy of Kiss. Starting on Monday, April 30, a long-term Local Programming and Marketing Agreement (LMA) Emmis signed with ESPN Radio to provide programming and sell advertising will take effect on the 98.7FM frequency.

Steve Harvey's show, which airs on WBLS, will continue, but The Tom Joyner Morning Show and The Michael Baisden Show  on Kiss will lose their New York over-the-air listeners. Some of the hosts from Kiss will move to WBLS.

WBLS came under new ownership when YMF Partners acquired its parent company Inner City Broadcasting which entered into bankruptcy. There was speculation that the new owners sell WBLS or change its format but such a change would have likely met with strong resistance from the Black community.

This had led to considerable speculation whether YMF would sell WBLS or change its format.

It was expected that any move to change the WBLS format to something other than urban, which launched in 1971, would have met strong community resistance.
