Interep to present 8th annual Power of
Urban Radio symposium June 13th
(April
10, 2006) Interep will hold its eighth “Power of Urban Radio” Symposium on
Tuesday, June 13th, at the JW
Marriott Hotel in downtown Chicago. The symposium showcases
thought-leadership in the field of multicultural marketing, particularly
as it relates to African American consumers and the urban marketplace. The
event is designed for advertising agencies and marketers to discuss and
learn how to strategically and tactically target today’s African American
community.
The focus of this year’s symposium will be on answering the question, “Can
Mainstream Media Effectively Target the African American Market?” Sherman
Kizart, Senior Vice President/ Director of Urban Marketing for Interep,
said, “The theme of this year’s symposium is very important to the urban
radio industry and to urban media overall. Those of us working day-to-day
with urban broadcasters know how strongly urban stations are interwoven
into the Urban community and lifestyle. We hope this symposium will help
educate marketers on the unparalleled effectiveness of urban radio in
reaching this consumer base.”
The keynote speaker for the event is McGhee Williams Osse, co-CEO of
Burrell Communications. Industry leaders Chesley Maddox-Dorsey
(President/COO, Access.1 Communications), Darryl Brown (Executive Vice
President/General Manager, ABC Radio Networks) and Jay Williams
(President, American Urban Radio Networks) are serving as co-chairs of
this year’s event.
Chesley Maddox-Dorsey said, “The theme of this year’s event is extremely
important to urban broadcasters. It is imperative that multicultural
marketers understand the special relationship that African American
consumers have with urban media. Generic just doesn’t cut it for
marketers who truly want their brand to make an emotional connection with
the urban community.”
“It is important that advertisers and their agencies stay informed on the
key issues surrounding multicultural marketing,” commented Darryl Brown.
“I believe forums like this one are an exceptional way to help educate
those decision-makers, and I am delighted to
serve as co-chair for this year’s Power of Urban Radio.”
Jay Williams added, “American Urban Radio
Network has been involved with Interep’s power events since the beginning.
This year, I am eager to take our relationship one step further and
actively participate in the planning of this important industry event.”

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
