The Week of March 20 - 26
Final games of regular season put NBA back on top of cable favorites

(March 31, 2006) With teams vying vigorously for playoffs positions, the NBA drew some its largest audiences of the season for ESPN. The L.A. Lakers vs. the Sacramento Kings game took the top spot on the top 25 most popular cable shows for the third full week of March. It benefited from the lead in of the number two show of the list, the Miami Heat/Detroit Pistons match-up. Both games were the only two programs to attract more than 100,000 black homes.

The big winner aside from basketball was the Disney channel. Its two repeat airings of “High School Musical” again attracted a huge audience among black households and took the second and third spots on the list. The original movia led Disney’s eight winners overall on the list. The overall number of black households watching the top 25 cable shows according to Nielsen Media Research was 1.26 million. That represented an increase of 13 percent over the previous week.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics.
