The Week of March 13 - 19
'Harry Potter' works its magic on black cable viewers to take week's top
spot
(March 23,
2006) The combination of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” and a
Saturday night gave the Disney channel 81,000 black households and the
week’s most watched cable program. The movie edged out TNT’s NBA
meeting between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat by less than 3,000
households and led Disney’s four winners on the week’s top 25.
Basketball still held its own, with four games making the list. It was the
movies – as usual – that dominated favorites. Seven of TNT’s offerings of
b-ball and flicks gave it the most winners for the third week of March.
Lifetime had five and BET claimed three. The overall number of black
households watching the top 25 cable shows, according to Nielsen Media
Research, was 1.11 million. That’s a drop of six percent from the previous
week’s total of 1.19 million.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
