March Madness brings on a basketball jones with black viewers

(March 13, 2006) It’s that time of year again when basketball rules the television airwaves. While college basketball’s March Madness is revving up, pro and college games are enjoying increased audiences as teams vie for the NBA playoffs and the NCAA's Sweet Sixteen.

For the first week of March, TNT network captured the number one spot for primetime cable shows watched by black households. The NBA game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Chicago Bulls was the week’s only cable offering to attract more than 100,000 homes. The contest was one of four b-ball games to make the top 25.

The overall winner was the Lifetime network, which claimed six shows on the list. TNT had five winners, while Disney and ESPN posted four each. The total number of black households watching the top 25 was 1.2 million, a 21 percent drop from the previous week’s total.

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
