AOL Black Voices
picks up Katrina documentary for online distribution
(March
13, 2006)
AOL
Black Voices has obtained the rights to show the compelling new
documentary about the plight of Hurricane Katrina's victims online after
it received critical acclaim at this year's Pan African American Film and
Arts Festival and won Best Documentary at the 2006 Houston Black Film
Festival. The documentary, called "New Orleans: My Home, My Life, My
Love," from Ruby Red, Inc., is part of AOL Black Voices' ongoing coverage
of one of America's worst natural disasters. The first clip of seven
installments will be available today for on-demand viewing at
www.blackvoices.com
"Acquiring this heartfelt documentary is part of our overall strategy of
offering the most original, unique and relevant video content available to
our audience of more than 2.8 million monthly unique visitors, as the
online medium becomes a more viable platform to showcase video
programming," said Janet Rolle, Vice President & General Manager, AOL
Black Voices. "We plan to continue to search for a range of compelling
video content, from entertainment and events to stories on topics that
matter to our Black Voices community."
"As independent filmmakers, we're excited about this unique opportunity to
share these true, often heartbreaking stories with AOL Black Voices'
online audience," said director Jamie R. Balthazar. "And this is a
fantastic platform to build interest in this documentary. We're looking
forward to working with AOL to make a difference in the lives of those
impacted by Hurricane Katrina."
Beyond the documentary, AOL Black Voices each month will develop original
articles and photo essays about those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Community involvement will also play a major role in this ongoing special
series, allowing people to talk about their issues and concerns that still
plague the Gulf Coast region.
Ruby Red is a full-service television production company located in Los
Angeles, Ca. Founded in 2005 by Gina M. Holland and Jamie R. Balthazar,
Ruby Red is dedicated to providing original, commercially successful, high
quality programs for distribution outlets worldwide. A minority-owned
media company, Ruby Red recently produced the 2005/2006 Comic View series
for BET and they are co-producers of the independent film, "Contradictions
of the Heart," starring Clifton Powell, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Vanessa
Williams and Wendy Raquel Robinson.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
