The week of Feb 20 - 26
BET’s 'Gospel Celebration' takes number one spot for black cable viewing

(March 1, 2006) The spirit and sports was the thread running through the most popular primetime cable shows in black households for the last week of February – Black History Month. BET’s star-studded “Celebration of Gospel” captured the number one spot, and its airing garnered two of the three winners for the channel in the week.

Ironically, the second and fourth most watched programs were also on the same Wednesday night in over-lapping time slots. TNT’s back-to-back NBA games still drew more than 100,000 homes each, thanks to the appearances of top-draw teams, the Pacers, Lakers, Pistons and Kings. The overall winners for the week were TNT, Disney and Lifetime which placed four shows each.

The NBA placed five winners on the list, the same number of programs as last week which included the All-Star festivities. The total number of black households watching the top 25 was 1.54 million, a 17 percent increase over the previous week.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
