The Week of February 19 - 25
TV shows with current, future stars top the list of favorites for the week

(February 27, 2007) The Oscars ruled last week with African-American TV viewers, but their appetite for star-gazing went beyond Hollywood’s biggest night.

This year black performers claimed five of the twenty nominations, the most in the history of the Academy Awards. That translated into 4.8 million total African-American viewers, 3.3 million black households and first place on the top 25 most popular shows of the week.

Oscar-related specials captured big black audiences as well. Barbara Walter’s special pulled in 1.6 million for a seventh place finish, while Oprah’s first Oscar special attracted 1.3 million for eleventh place. ”American Idol” notched second, third and fourth place on the chart, with each broadcast pulling in more than 2 million homes.

Thanks to its star power programming, ABC forced CBS to share its usual title as the week’s winning network. Both had six entries on the top 25. Fox and the CW each had five, and NBC claimed three shows.

The total number of African-American households watching the top 25 shows was 39.1 million, a nine percent increase over the week’s previous total.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
