The Week of February 12 - 18
'American Idol' still holds sway with black viewers, CBS remains top network

(February 22, 2007) Fox's “American Idol” continues to steamroll over the competition for black TV viewers, especially now that contestant LaKisha Jones has emerged as a favorite.  Both airings of the reality talent show took the Top 25’s top two spots and together attracted just under six million black households for the second week of February.  “House” rode on the show’s coattails to capture the third position, giving Fox the week’s Trifecta.

The week’s network winner was again CBS, which claimed eight of the Top 25 most popular shows in black homes. Fox followed with six winners.  NBC and the CW both notched four shows, while ABC posted three.

The total number of black households watching the top 25 shows was 35.8 million,  a drop of nine percent from the previous week’s total of 39.4 million.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
