Darryl Brown leaving post as EVP/GM of ABC Radio Networks
From
Radio Ink (January 25, 2008) ABC Radio Networks EVP/GM Darryl Brown is stepping
away from his day-to-day duties with the network in order to spend more
time with his growing family. However, Brown will remain close to the
network as a special adviser on Hispanic radio to ABC Radio Networks
President Jim Robinson.
In a memo sent today to network staff, Robinson said, "After almost 30
years of providing thoughtful leadership to ABC Radio Networks, Darryl
Brown is taking on a new role ... and a not so new one too. As of next
week, Darryl will begin assignment as a special consultant to me and our
Hispanic team. This means he will no longer be on-site here at the network
on a day-to-day basis. His primary job will be helping his wife, Jean Ann,
chase their two young sons. Darryl was looking for a better balance
between work and family, and I certainly support him in this decision. I'm
grateful that he will remain part of our network family by continuing to
advise us on our Hispanic platform initiatives."
Speaking exclusively with Radio Ink, Brown said he believes the
Hispanic listening audience offers significant untapped opportunity for
the industry. "There is a dire need for content and solid information in
the Hispanic world," he says. "I am going to work with some talent and
companies that want to move their initiatives ahead by tapping into this
community. The Hispanic arena fascinates me."
Brown notes that the first order of business with his new endeavor is to
see through plans already underway at ABC that aim to connect to the
Hispanic listener. "I will continue to move our initiative forward," he
says. "We have some pretty aggressive programming initiatives for 2008,
and I don't want to walk away from that; I want to see it come into its
own."
He adds, "We have a strong history, and I love that we still have ABC News
backing us, a well respected research arm, and a sales department that has
the respect it has."
Discussing his decision to step away from his official capacity after so
many years with ABC, Brown discussed the increasing importance of family
in his life. "My focus is my 6-year-old and 3-year-old sons. With
fatherhood and parenting, life has taken on a different meaning. I want to
see them grow up. I'm fortunate to have this opportunity."
