Advertisers meet with FCC over 'No Urban,
Hispanic Dictates'
From Radio Ink
(January 25, 2008) Representatives from the American Association of
Advertising Agencies, the American Advertising Federation, and the
Association of National Advertisers are meeting today with FCC
Commissioners Jonathan Adelstein and Robert McDowell to discuss how to
best implement new FCC rules that prohibit advertisers from adopting
policies against advertising on Urban or Hispanic radio stations.
Also on hand for the meetings are representatives from the National
Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation, Minority Media
Telecommunications Council, and Interep.
Last month, the FCC adopted a rule that requires broadcasters at the time
of license renewal to certify that their advertising sales contracts do
not discriminate on the basis of race or gender.
One individual attending today's meetings tells Radio Ink that the
associations are interested in creating an educational campaign that would
target both agencies and individual advertisers about the new rule, and
are looking for direction from the FCC about how best to proceed.
"For this FCC order to have teeth, there has to be adherence to the
rule," says this insider. "These associations are looking for ways to
educate their members."
